Description
The American Osteopathic Association is seeking applicants for a public member position on the Bureau of Osteopathic Specialists (BOS), the main certification body that oversees the 15 AOA specialty boards that advances and supports high standards, accountability, and continuous improvement across all AOA board certification specialties and subspecialties.
The public member will bring an independent, external perspective to BOS discussions and help ensure that the interests of the public, patients, consumers, and other stakeholders are considered in certification policy and decision-making. This role is intended to strengthen transparency, public accountability, and responsiveness in the work of the BOS.
Requirements
Ideal candidates will have:
- A distinguished record of professional achievement or public service
- Experience contributing effectively in a committee or governance setting
- Demonstrated leadership in public, nonprofit, consumer, patient, regulatory, quality, education, or related organizations
- The ability to offer an objective, consumer-oriented perspective
- A commitment to confidentiality and thoughtful participation
Candidates should not have conflicts of interest with the work of the BOS, including current or recent financial, employment, supervisory, or professional ties that could compromise the independence of the public member role.
The public member will serve a three-year term and may be eligible for one additional three-year term. The anticipated time commitment includes participation in BOS meetings and related committee or leadership activities.
NOTE: This is a volunteer position, although travel expenses will be reimbursed for attending 1-2 in-person meetings per year in Chicago.
